Al Shaqab Stresses Importance of Equestrian Heritage


Doha, Qatar (February 10, 2010): The Concept and Vision of Al Shaqab, member of Qatar Foundation, were presented during the Qatar Olympic Sports Museum's two-day seminar "Horse Games - Horse Sports."

Fahad Saad Al Qahtani, Director of Al Shaqab, provided background on Al Shaqab and emphasized the importance of identifying and promoting Qatar's equestrian heritage as a means to preserve Qatari culture. Throughout the presentation, Mr. Al Qahtani stressed Qatar's significant equestrian history and how the equestrian skills and discipline taught at Al Shaqab can help guide future generations of Qataris. He promoted Al Shaqab's mission as a means to preserve and further develop the Arabian breed and equestrian pursuits in the state of Qatar.

"Qatari society is developing so rapidly that we must not lose our cultural identity," Said Al Qahtani. "Al Shaqab will provide a vital link to our heritage and pass on the important Qatar legacy of horsemanship."

Omar Al Mannai, assistant manager of Al Shaqab's Riding Academy, discussed the new Al Shaqab facilities that are under construction. He outlined how the new state-of-the-art facilities will provide the State of Qatar a world-class, comprehensive equestrian facility for cultural and educational purposes.

His Highness, The Emir, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani founded Al Shaqab in 1992 to preserve and further develop the Arabian horse in Qatar.  The organization is led by His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani and encompasses a Breeding & Show division, Riding Academy and Endurance Team. In 2004, Al Shaqab became a member of Qatar Foundation. Al Shaqab's mission is to promote the highest standards in the breeding and showing of Arabian horses and provide innovative, educational and competitive opportunities in all of the equestrian arts.
