Al Shaqab Celebrates Proud Arabian Horse Heritage with Open House


Doha, Qatar (February 24, 2010) - Al Shaqab, member of Qatar Foundation, held its first open house for the public on Monday as a celebration of the Arabian Horse heritage that is part of the foundation of Qatari culture.

Approximately 300 guests from around the Gulf attended the impressive event that featured a presentation on Al Shaqab's history and community mission, a show of champion Arabian horses, a charitable horse auction and a dinner. Many high profile equine enthusiasts were in attendance, including Sheikh Mohammed Bin Faleh Al Thani, General Supervisior of Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club; Sheikh Saud Al Thani, Al Rayyan Farm, Qatar; Sami Jassim Al-Boenain, Head of General Management of Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club; Majid Nasser Al Kaabi, Manager of Arabian Horse Show Section of Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club; Mutlaq Bin Mushrif, General Manager of Al Khalediah Stables, KSA; Dr. Salam Al Baraq, Adhba Stud, KSA; Ms. Hannie Maasdijk, manager of Al Shahania Stud, Qatar, and Ms. Judith Forbis, USA.

As part of Al Shaqab's strong community focus, the highlight of the evening was the auction of 29 pure-bred Arabian horses. All proceeds from the sale of the splendid Arabian horses will be donated to support community organizations throughout Qatar.
The high point of the auction was the sale of Maitha Al Shaqab, a three-year-old daughter of three-time World Champion Marwan Al Shaqab. The impressive grey filly drew a sales topping price of 160,000 qr
.
His Highness, The Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani founded Al Shaqab in 1992 to preserve and further develop the Arabian horse in Qatar. Al Shaqab is led by H E Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and encompasses a Breeding & Show division, Riding Academy and Endurance Team. In 2004, Al Shaqab proudly became a member of Qatar Foundation. Al Shaqab's mission is to promote the highest standards in the breeding and showing of Arabian horses and serve as a community resource with innovative, educational and competitive opportunities in all of the equestrian arts.
